Athletes Area - Career exploration, planning and navigation
Dual career in sport refers to the amalgamation of an athletic career with education and/or occupation. It can be a challenging task to balance and succeed in education while also competing in high-performance sport. Researchers Lavallee & Wylleman (2000) suggest that the increasing demands on athletic performance in elite sports places high pressure on young athletes, who may feel they are forced to choose between maximizing their athletic potential or obtaining a satisfying education for a post-athletic career. In Ireland, ESRI report (2018) of GAA intercounty players it was revealed that the number one reason players decided to quit playing at inter county level was due to the desire to focus on their professional career.
Therefore, as a society we need to view at a holistic level. According to Wylleman (2019a) and (Wylleman et al., 2013) this means multidimensional with athletic development accompanied with psychological, psychosocial, academic-vocational, financial, and legal layers influencing each other in multiple ways, where changes in one layer inevitably lead to changes in the other layers.
My services support the holistic approach to dual career development for athletes which helps athletes reach their full potential in all aspects of life (academic, sport and professional vocation). I inform, guide and empower athletes with their educational options and decisions along with exploring and devising careers plans for their future. So, if you are an elite athlete and you are struggling with balancing education, work and sporting commitments book now to start your journey toward a balanced dual career.

Life after retirement – professional athletes
If you have funneled all your energy and focus into being an elite athlete, it can be difficult to see what life might look like after retirement from sport. However, to support your overall wellbeing it is essential to explore and develop plans for this phase of your life so that you can transition confidently and successful into a new world with new but equally passionate goals.
My work starts with exploring your interests and auditing your education, work experience and extracurricular commitments up to this point. We will aim to identify a career direction you wish to pursue. Then we will analyze the gaps and aim to establish how to bridge these gaps. Each session will unearth your anxieties and worries regarding this transition and set out action plans to work on independently between sessions.
